Mettle:

The dictionary defines ‘Mettle’ as ‘Courage, spirit, character – the quality of a person’s disposition or temperament’. When we talk about being ‘on one’s mettle’, we are encouraging each other to ‘do our very best’ in all things. With this in mind, there can be no better title for this latest and much-called for resource that YFC has developed to meet the vitally important needs of 14-18s.

Mettle is not a ‘quick fix’ course on Christianity. It’s more of an ongoing programme, designed to build Courage, Spirit and Character - essential Christ-like qualities that will help 14-18s make informed choices throughout this rapidly changing and challenging time of their lives.

Mettle is easy to adapt for groups of any size and is suitable for those with or without a church background. The resources are all geared towards giving you and your group the opportunity to choose subjects and sessions that are most relevant to your particular situation.

Mettle is fully integrated with other existing resources from Youth for Christ, including Rock Solid, RS2 and the Art of Connecting. Whether you are an experienced youth worker or a volunteer just starting out in youth ministry, you are sure to find plenty in these resources to challenge and inspire both you and the young people in your group.

Mettle works through 3 Key activity areas

  1. Core iconCore Sessions - these teach the basics of Christianity and address the gaps in Christian knowledge and experience of many young people. Selection of at least two of the Core Sessions are mandatory and should form the central part of the programme giving plenty of time and space for discussion and developing biblical understanding.
  2. Hot Potato iconHot Potato Sessions - these offer a choice of challenging and stimulating sessions to get your young people talking openly and responding positively to the peer pressures and hard-hitting issues they face today.
  3. Wildcard iconWildcard Sessions - these suggest ways to vary the programme by either socialising as a group or organising a practical activity that could impact the local church and community.

Mettle Contains 3 underlying Principles

  1. Creative worship - Mettle helps you explore different ways to worship and engage with God at every session.
  2. Flexible programme - Mettle offers flexibility and choice so that the content is tailored to meet the individual needs of your group.
  3. Personal walk - Mettle equips young people to keep close to Jesus by providing daily resources for personal prayer and Bible study.

  Replenish:

When you are a youth leader or a youth worker in a Church it is hard to find the time and space within the service to be with God. Whether you are preparing for running the Sunday morning group or just having your young people asking about what is happening during the coming week, taking time to worship and be fed is difficult.

Replenish aims to be a place where those involved in youth ministry within their Church can come and just Be with God. A place to be refilled and refreshed, a place to talk to and hear from God. If we are not connecting with God how can we be fully effective to our young people.  Click here for more info.

    Youth Alpha!

Nottingham YfC are now Youth Alpha advisors for Nottinghamshire. If you are looking to bridge the gap between unchurched young people and The Gospel or want some basic studies for your own church young people then Youth Alpha is great. Looking at themes like Who is Jesus? why did Jesus die? How do i read the Bible? it gives young people a great foundation in their faith. NYfC can provide both materials and training as well as leading odd sessions and weekends away. If you would like to know more then contact us.

Rock Solid: there's nothing like it...

For over twelve years the Rock Solid outreach programme has been helping local churches reach out to young people. Launched by YFC North East in 1990, Rock Solid has now been tried and tested in over 600 locations and currently impacts 8,000 11-14 year olds each week.

Rock Solid Clubs benefit from a continuous supply of programmes, currently involving over 120 different themes. Each one starts with games and moves on to life skills. Towards the end of the evening they look at how God wants to help with the issues in focus.

Rock Solid clubs run at the following locations in Nottingham:

  • St. Mary's Church, Arnold
  • St. Peter's, Toton
  • Central Methodist Church, Hucknall

If you would like more information about these clubs and when they are happen, please contact Richard Dawson.

RS2: ...a new way of doing Sunday!

RS2 is similar in style to Rock Solid but for 11-14 year olds who:

  • were brought up to go to church
  • have recently become Christians
  • are showing a serious interest in Christianity
  • are wanting to know how to follow Christ at their age and in their world

RS2 works well on a Sunday, but it's not Sunday School >>>
it's lots of fun, but not just entertainment >>>
it provides weekly programmes, but is more than a resource >>>
it will keep them involved, and attract their friends as well>>>

Each RS2 meeting includes ice-breakers, interactive challenges, creative Bible Studies, lively discussion with the occasional competition thrown in. Each session ends by encouraging the young people to reflect upon what God might be saying to them or about the issues discussed and praying together in creative ways.
